Is there anything more important in your home than the air you breathe? In this project, ArcTouch teamed up with 3M to design and develop the Filtrete™ Smart app that powers the Filtrete™ Smart Air Filter. Using Bluetooth® technology, the app communicates with the filter’s built-in sensor.
Available for iOS and Android, the app monitors the airflow and filter usage —
and alerts you when it’s time to replace your filter.

Context
The Filtrete Smart app was around since 2016, and in 2020 we proposed an update in the UX & UI to accommodate new types of information that came with connecting new smart devices. For that, the design team created a new design system that was able to allow easy maintenance while we audit the whole app experience.

Challenges
While we update the screen to match the new design system, we also need to identify points of improvement and make room for 2 devices: Purple Air and a new product powered by 3M the Room Air Purifier.

Connecting IOT Devices
The workflow consisted of mapping the previous adding device flow, which had some points of improvement, and then working close to the product manager and developers to make the UX as seamless as possible to users add new devices. We used overflow to map the whole experience until we nailed the final version.

Display New Information
The new device Room air Purifier device brought new reading levels of Air Quality that didn't exist previously. Here, the challenge was more about UI, although the UX work was decisive to us reach a frictionless flow to access visually clear information.

Design System Update & Management
My personal challenge was to keep the communication channels updated between teams while we implement the new design system. Although we had a robust design system, there were too many options and variations at first, which turned into a problem since the documentation wasn't completed yet, and guiding information still didn't exist.
To solve this issue, the design team come together in a series of meetings to audit and narrow down our system to the most rational possible, which make our decision-making while designing the final screens much easier later in the project. We defined UI patterns and build accessible documentation.

Among all the outcomes from this projects in a design perspective (design system management, UX and UI improvements, user testing findings, development issues solved, etc) I believe the most valuable one was the ability to navigate between so many POV's and maintain constant and clear communication between all the channels. This was definitely the biggest challenge of this project for me, and the one I most learned from.
