Delta is a lead on air travel across the US, and as part of their flight experience, Delta Vacations is a service where consumers can buy custom trip packages: flight tickets, hotels & resorts, local transfers, and special extra activities to enjoy their vacation.

My Role
Design the new website based on a previous version that was outdated, bring it to the new Delta Fresh Air system style, and improve the user experience across multiple platforms.

Previous Delta Vacation Traveller Details Page

Challenges

The biggest issue with the previous version was that it didn't count with scalable breakpoints, so even for a mobile phone the interface was the same as a desktop. As serious accessibility and usability problem, that was the main point to improve and make sure every screen is fully responsive.

Solution
We redesign the whole website end-to-end, following the guidelines of best practices and the Fresh Air Design Foundations, a library of styles and components already in active usage across other products from Delta, keeping it consistent with the ecosystem.

Context

The Filtrete Smart app was around since 2016, and in 2020 we proposed an update in the UX & UI to accommodate new types of information that came with connecting new smart devices. For that, the design team created a new design system that was able to allow easy maintenance while we audit the whole app experience.

I also build custom components based on the Fresh Air Design System to match the needs of that specific step of the experience. By using components in a library separately from the screen layouts, all breakpoints and screens were automatically updated while in design work productions, and also make the design process quicker and more efficient.

New Feature: Hotels Finder Map

The hotel's results page is a key point for the experience since it's the first thing users need to select after performing the search on destinations on the landing page, and previously it had only a simple list view of the results with small imagery.

The user can also add extras to the trip, as transfers and special experiences if available at or near the hotel they previously selected. Quick note on this screens: the images are quite small due a limitation on the backend to provide bigger images in time for the MVP, so we needed to adjust the layouts to this limitation until we have the best imagery.

After that, they get an summary of their vacation plans and proceed to paying and confimation that are managed outside the scope of this experience.

Outcomes
Due NDA compliance, I can't share data related information related to the design improvements, but from my personal experience, this project was a major improvement at:

- Streamlined design process
- Design and document artifacts
- Visual update to match branding

The new Delta Vacations Portal was released in 2021 and it's available internationally at Delta.com/vacations
